As a pioneering product, visibility,
education and information is of primary
importance. What we did achieve in no
uncertain terms, was to speak to several
influential wine producers who are
convinced that the selling of quality
wine by the glass, is the way forward to
increase wine sales in SA.
The second group, namely the
consumers, were fascinated by the concept
of wine preservation. They confirmed the
desperate need for quality wine and
champagne to be sold by the glass in the
SA context. Many of these people travel
extensively and have experienced the wide
variety of wines offered by the glass in
restaurants and hotels abroad. In
general, the average South African wine
drinker is far more discerning than
before, hence their growing intolerance
of inferior or oxidised wines. We were
able to encourage them to be more
demanding of restaurants to improve this
service in the on-trade.
Finally, there were a considerable
number of restaurants and hotels
represented, several of whom were most
interested. This was an excellent
opportunity of meeting and influencing
those who did come.
